Massive bombing in Swedish capital Stockholm.

An explosion took place in the affluent area of Östermalm in Stockholm on Sunday night, 12th of January, causing extensive material damage. The attack took place at a residential building and photos from the scene shows debris and glass scattered all over the street. Several cars were also damaged in the blast.

Some 40 people were evacuated and Swedish police initiated a “special event” because of the explosion that took place in central Stockholm.

The detonation is one of the most powerful explosions ever to happen in the region of Stockholm according to Swedish police.

“This is the most powerful that I have knowledge of” said Erik Widstrand, chief of police in Stockholm City. The police also said that it was “pure luck that no-one was injured” in the attack.

The area where the attack took place is one of the most affluent areas in Sweden, which shows that the bombings now have reached even these areas in Sweden. Previously bombings have mostly happened in less well off areas such as parts of Malmö. No-one has been arrested as of the time of writing for the attack in Stockholm.

However, this was not the only explosion that took place this night. Another bombing took place in the city of Uppsala a few hours later. The explosion was so powerful that it was heard around 6km away. This took place outside a club, and a car wars damaged from the blast.

Last year saw a record number of bombings in Sweden, with a whopping 236 explosions in the first 11 months of 2019, compared with 162 explosions for the year of 2018.

One attack that got particular media attention was a bomb that detonated in the summer of 2019 in the city of Linköping. A device with 15-20kg of explosives detonated and caused serious material damage. Around 250 apartments were damaged in the blast and some 20 people were injured in the attack.

Swedish people have taken to social media expressing their anger and fear after the attack in Stockholm.

One Swedish Twitter user asks “Why do we have to live like this?”
