Sweden: Elderly woman convicted of “hate speech” after Facebook post

A pensioner in Sweden has been sentenced to a total of SEK 12 000 in fines for thought crimes after commenting on an article on facebook.

The article in question was published on the Swedish news site FriaTider, which is about a Somalian citizen who was allowed to stay in Sweden despite having been convicted of attempted rape and sexual harassment.

After his conviction, the man had continued to sexually harass women while bragging that it was his “right” to “have sex with Swedish women”.

That appeared to have upset the woman, who is in her 70s, prompting her to comment on facebook, pointing out that Sweden is absurdly deporting migrants who are well integrated.

She also urged the Prime minister of Sweden to resign while complaining that she cannot recognize Sweden anymore.

According to the Swedish court, the elderly woman commented on the article in a Swedish facebook group with the following.

“Somalians hate women. There are families with children and migrants who are sick that have behaved well, studied and learnt our language. THEY get deported??????? The Prime Minister must go. He with the big bosom – One should take care of each other ugh…This is not Sweden anymore with so much misery – One doesn’t recognize the clean and peaceful Sweden anymore. Someone wrote that Sweden has never been safer. Where is he now.”

At first instance the elderly woman was freed by the court in Uppsala, because the prosecutor couldn’t prove it actually was the woman that had written the text.

However Svea appeals court ruled that the woman was guilty of posting the comment and thus sentenced her to a total of SEK 12 000 ($1242) in fines.

In 2018, a 65 year old woman was sentenced to 3 months in prison after being found guilty of posting hate speech on facebook.
