Footage shows the desperate scenes in Italy as hospitals are full with patients amid the corona virus outbreak which has killed 4 825 people in the country so far.

Hospitals in the region of Lombardy are some of the best in the world, yet they have been overwhelmed by the sheer number of patients needing intensive care due to the pandemic.

At the time of writing, Lombardy has 25 515 infected and 3 095 deaths, a terrifying death rate of 12%. So far 4 235 have been discharged from hospital, while 8 258 people are in hospital.

The situation has been so dire, that the Italian city of Bergamo has had to transport dead people out of the city as crematoriums were struggling to cope.

A convoy of army vehicles could be seen in the town as they were transporting the dead to other regions in order to be cremated.

Italy has been put in lockdown, but the cases of infected are still continuing to rapidly increase.

Sky News have been reporting from inside one of the hospitals, were according to them they call this “the apocalypse”.

The footage shows the hospital filled with corona virus patients on ventilators, as doctors are struggling to help them.

The team at Sky News are led through corridors full of gasping people. When the reporter asks what ward he is in, he is told that it is actually a waiting room.

Emergency arrivals ward looks like an intensive care unit, but the people there are all new arrivals.

The head of emergency care, Dr. Roberto Cosentini told the Sky News team that this is not like the flu.

“No, its utterly another thing…More pneumonia than flu…it’s a very severe pneumonia and so it’s a massive strain for every health system, because we see every day 50 to 60 patients who come to our emergency department with pneumonia.”

As we reported on earlier, patients over the age of 80 could be left to die as hospitals are being overwhelmed in Italy.

Italy has been the epicentre of the corona virus outbreak in Europe, now with the total number of infections at 53 578 and 4 825 dead.

The Italian minister of foreign affairs have warned people to stay at home, saying “this is not a game and that there are people who are dying”.
