Swedish politician Björn Söder asked the Interior Minister if the government is prepared to classify the far-left extremist network Antifa as a terrorist organization, this after Donald Trump announced the USA would classify them as such.
Björn Söder, of the right-wing Swedish Democrat party, pointed out how the far-left network has a long history of violence against people with different political opinions.
“The actions of AFA [Swedish for Antifa] have in many cases been violent, and the organization has taken responsibility for among other things murder arson, assault and threats against actors that are seen as opponents. They believe violence is a legitimate method of reaching their goals” Björn Söder said.
He also says that the goal of Antifa is that through a revolution get rid of the existing societal order in exchange for a stateless and classless society.
Furthermore, he points out that Swedish security services sees Antifa as one of the leading organizations within the autonomous movement, which is seen as a threat to democracy.
The politician also provides a long list of different attacks that Antifa have been behind in Sweden including:
- Swedish Democrats that celebrated national day in Rottne 2006 were attacked with baseball bats or similar according to police. Antifa in Jönköping took responsibility for the attack.
- In July 2007 a judge at the migration court in Gothenburg was attacked and threatened. The perpetrator threw an axe in the judge’s door, spray painted his house and poured out red paint. Antifa claimed responsibility on their website.
- In February 2009 a politician named Vávra Suk was assaulted. The attack was classified by police as attempted murder and Antifa claimed responsibility for the attack.
“Sweden has earlier referred to the EU and UN terror classification. However it is clear that these classifications isn’t always enough. To sustain democracy and freedom it is important that activities that are violent and paramilitary can be classified as terrorism and therefore meet resistance from society on completely different levels” Björn Söder said.
He ends by asking the Swedish Interior Minister Mikael Damberg if the government will classify Antifa as a terrorist organization.
As we reported on earlier, a far-left extremist was arrested last year in Sweden after bombs were found, including near a police station.
According to Europol, there was a total of 27 terrorist attacks committed by left-wing violent extremists in 2016.
