The small country is to expand it’s military to such a degree that has not been seen since the 50s.
A whopping $3 billion will be used to fund the army, which will see a “serious military capacity increase” according to Swedish Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist.
This after a deal was struck between the Socialist party, the Centre party, the Liberals and the Green party.
This is an increase in funding to the military with 40%. The money will go to increasing the army, strengthening the air force and the marine amongst other things.
It is planned to increase army staff from 60 000 to 85-90 000.
The money will be spent between 2021 – 2025.
However the Moderates and Christian Democrats want to increase military spending even more, with the Moderates saying they will come with a motion already this autumn to increase the defence budget for 2026 and 2027.
The Swedish parliament will vote on the funding in December.
