Retail giant Stora Coop has announced nationwide price reductions across more than 600 of its top-selling grocery items, aiming to challenge discount rivals like Willys. The move comes as consumer comparison groups warn that broader food price inflation could soon reaccelerate across Sweden.

The price cuts, which take effect immediately across all 98 Stora Coop hypermarkets in Sweden, reduce costs on everyday staples by an average of 6.5 to 6.9 percent.

In brief:

  • Main finding: Stora Coop is permanently cutting prices on over 600 top-selling products by an average of 6.5%.
  • Where: Across all 98 Stora Coop hypermarkets in Sweden.
  • Who it affects: Swedish shoppers and Coop member-owners looking for lower grocery bills.
  • Why it matters: Independent studies ranked Willys about 6% cheaper than Stora Coop, prompting Coop to align prices more closely with discount competitors.
  • What to know: Price watchdogs warn that broader commodity cost pressures could still push wholesale food costs higher later this autumn.

Closing the gap with discount competitors

According to market analyses by the independent price tracking service Matpriskollen, Axfood’s discount chain Willys has consistently held the position as Sweden’s cheapest major grocery chain. Matpriskollen’s comparative benchmarks found that comparable shopping baskets at Stora Coop averaged roughly 6 percent more expensive than at Willys.

Coop Sverige Chief Executive Officer Anders Torell confirmed that the permanent reductions target high-volume products—such as bread, butter-oil blends, yogurts, and everyday pre-made meals—to directly address the chain’s reputation for higher price points.

“Price is one of the issues that matters most to our members and customers, and therefore it is a top priority across the entire Coop network,” Torell said. “When we work efficiently and coordinate closely across purchasing, range, and logistics, we make better use of our scale, which ultimately shows up on store shelves.”

Torell emphasized in interviews with Dagens Nyheter (DN) that Coop is not raising prices on other items in its inventory to compensate for the cuts. All 23 regional consumer co-operatives that jointly own Coop Sverige have backed the pricing strategy.

Retailers buck trend amid rising cost pressures

Stora Coop’s price reductions arrive at a time when consumer advocates are warning of broader upward pressure on Swedish food prices.

Ulf Mazur, founder of Matpriskollen, warned that the current market stability may represent the “calm before the storm.” Geopolitical conflict in the Middle East, high energy costs, and extreme weather phenomena such as El Niño continue to push raw agricultural commodity prices higher globally.

“We are already seeing early signs on supermarket shelves: the number of standard items subjected to price increases doubled in September, rising from one in ten items to one in five,” Mazur noted.

According to Matpriskollen, food manufacturers have struggled to absorb rising supply costs completely, leading to higher price adjustments during autumn negotiations between food producers and retail buyers. While Stora Coop’s price cuts provide immediate relief on key household staples, industry analysts expect broader food price volatility to remain a central concern for Swedish consumers heading into winter.
